The Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) Summer camps were held July 11-14 at the Cowley College Sumner Campus in Wellington, KS. The camps were free and open to students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
The days were divided by grades; kindergarten through second grade (23 attended), third through fifth grade (34 attended), and sixth through eighth grade (18 attended). The last day of the camp was for the 48 Wellington kindergarten through eighth-grade summer school students. Campers learned how to code, program, build robots that move, have the robots go through a maze, bowling, race, golf, go down hallways and turn around, and use robotics to fly airplanes, draw, and play music using fruit.
Ms. Vanessa Sawyer, her children, and teachers from the elementary schools in Wellington provided the classroom leadership. Dean Kern, NASA, attended a few of the camps and spoke about robotics, space, and other opportunities at NASA.
Kern helped students use critical thinking and patience to get the robots built and working. David Hays, Cowley College instructor, served as the technical advisor. Jen Kern, USD353, and Jan Grace, Cowley Sumner Campus operations officer, assisted with organizing the event.
The sponsors of the camps were Cowley College Sumner Campus, KanOkla, and USD353. The partners for all the robotics programs were Cowley College, KanOkla, Sumner Cowley Electric Coop, and the Sumner County Economic Development.
“The camps were a huge success,” Jan Grace said. “Plans are already being discussed for next year’s camps.”
