Sarwinski, Holmes Garner MIAA Weekly Honors

Pittsburg State University graduate linebacker P.J. Sarwinski was tabbed the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week Monday (Oct. 10), while sophomore placekicker Cross Holmes was selected the MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week.

Sarwinski made a team-leading nine tackles including 1.5 tackles-for-loss to help lead No. 7 Pittsburg State to a 24-22 home win over No. 9 Northwest Missouri in front of 10,108 fans at Carnie Smith Stadium Saturday (Oct. 8).

The Galena, Kan., native posted one of four quarterback sacks by the Pitt State defense as the Gorillas limited the Bearcats to 53 net rushing yards in the contest. Sarwinski also made one pass breakup and added a quarterback hurry to his stat line.

Holmes booted a 45-yard field goal with 2:25 to play in the game for what proved to be the game's deciding points. The Aurora, Ill., native staked the Gorillas to a 24-16 edge with his field goal.

He successfully converted all three of his PAT kicks in the contest as well.
