Darrian Nebeker hit two free throws with 2.5 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the University of Nebraska-Kearney men's basketball team to a 63-61 win over Pittsburg State University Thursday (Jan. 5).
Pitt State (5-9, 2-6 MIAA) rallied from a seven-point deficit, 54-47, with 5:44 to play in the game with a 12-4 run to take a 59-58 lead on Quentin Hardrict Jr.'s layup with 53 seconds to go.
UNK's Jaleque Dunson hit a 3-pointer to give the Lopers (3-11, 1-7 MIAA) a 61-59 edge with 22 ticks remaining, but Hardrict drove to the basket and finished to knot the score at 61-61 with 14 seconds to play.
After a UNK timeout, the Lopers got the ball to Nebeker, who drew the foul to set up his game winning charity shots.
Hardrict paced a balanced Pitt State offensive attack with 17 points, while Albert McBride (14), Deshaun English II (12) and Calvin Poulina (11) all scored in double figures as well for the Gorillas.
Dunson (15), Sean Evans (14), Nebeker (13) and Ryder Kirsch (10) all produced double-digit scoring for the Lopers.
Pitt State will look to wrap up a three-game road trip Saturday (Jan. 7) when the Gorillas travel to Hays, Kan., to face MIAA rival Fort Hays State University at 4 p.m. (CST) at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
