The Washburn University men's basketball team countered a second half run by Pittsburg State University with one of their own to pull away for a 93-63 victory Saturday (Jan. 14) at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court.
The Gorillas (5-12, 2-9 MIAA) battled back from a 23-point halftime deficit to outscore the Ichabods (6-9, 3-6 MIAA), 14-1, to pull within 10 points, 49-39, with 14:06 to play in the game. Pitt State still trailed by 10, 53-43, with 11:19 to go, but WU countered with a 19-2 run to take control.
Tyler Nelson poured in a game high 23 points to lead five Ichabods players in double figures. Jarmell Johnson (16), Jaden Monday (15), Levi Braun (13) and Brady Christiansen (11) also reached double digits.
Deshaun English II had a team-leading 15 points for the Gorillas, while Quentin Hardrict Jr. added 10. R.J. Forney Jr. chipped in with nine points and Albert McBride finished with eight.
The Gorillas will hit the road for Claremore, Okla., Thursday (Jan. 19) to face MIAA rival Rogers State University at 7:30 p.m. (CST).
