No. 10 Lopers Hold Off Gorillas, 70-67
Sarah Schmitt made four free throws in the game's final seven seconds to help the No. 10 ranked University of Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team hold off Pittsburg State University, 70-67, Saturday (Feb. 18) at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court.
Schmitt's two free throws with seven seconds to play gave the Lopers (26-3, 19-2 MIAA) a 68-65 edge. Pitt State's Grace Pyle was fouled on a 3-point field goal attempt with one seconds to go. She missed her first free throw attempt before making the final two to draw the Gorillas (20-6, 15-5 MIAA) within a point, 68-67. Pitt State fouled Schmitt on the ensuing inbound play and she hit two more free throws to seal the victory.
Schmitt led all scorers with 20 points in the game for UNK, while Klaire Kirsch added a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Harper Schreiner led a balanced Pitt State offensive attack with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Tristan Gegg added 13 points, Pyle finished with 13 and Erin Davis chipped in with 11 points. Karenna Gerber rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.
The Gorillas will return to action Thursday (Feb. 23) when they travel to Emporia, Kan., to face Emporia State University at 5:30 p.m. (CST) at W.L. White Auditorium.
