Washington, D.C. – On May 10, 2023, Congressman Jake LaTurner (R-KS) announced that Overbrook native and Cornerstone Family Schools student, Magdalene Giar, has won the 2023 Congressional Art Competition for the Second Congressional District of Kansas.

"Congratulations to Topeka student Magdalene Giar on winning the 2023 Congressional Art Competition," said Rep. LaTurner. "Magdalene's colored pencil rendering of a cardinal in the snow is a true work of art and I can't wait to proudly display it in the halls of Congress. I was so impressed by the dozens of submissions this year, and want to thank all the students across the Second District who participated."

“Winter is not my favorite time of year, but cardinals represent a bright interjection of color into a dreary season. For over a year, I wanted to create a piece with a cardinal in the snow. The idea came back to me while birdwatching. I chose to crop my artwork tighter than the reference image to represent a detailed view of this songbird," said Magdalene Giar.

Each spring, a nationwide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

As the 2023 winner from the Second District, Magdalene will have the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. to meet with Rep. LaTurner and see her artwork proudly displayed in the halls of the United States Congress. The exhibit in Washington will include the winning artwork from all participating districts from around the country.
