Legislative updates shared at Kansas Hospital Association convention

The Kansas State Fair is currently open until September 15, with staff available daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Pride of Kansas building to answer questions and provide information.

At the Kansas Hospital Association’s annual convention, discussions centered on healthcare challenges such as hospital closures, reimbursement rate difficulties, and high drug prices. Legislative updates were provided on priorities including bettering 340B drug prices, keeping rural hospitals open, and improving rebates through the 340B Program. The REH Improvement Act aims to allow Critical Access Hospitals facing closure to convert to Rural Emergency Hospitals, while the SUSTAIN 340B Act focuses on discounts, rebates, and reforms in drug pricing.

"I am grateful to each of our hospital CEOs, administrators and their teams for the invaluable work they do," was expressed in gratitude towards healthcare professionals. Special thanks were extended to KHA President Chad Austin and Audrey Dunkel for their invitation.

Federal resources have been announced for Fort Hays Tech North Central in Beloit to expand its welding, Commercial Driver’s License, and nursing programs. This initiative aims to attract Kansans to local schools and equip students for community-based careers. Appreciation was shown towards President Eric Burks for his participation in the announcement.

A $23.8 million contract has been awarded by the Air Force Research Laboratory from Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio to Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita for expanding research and production. The importance of this program for national security and Kansas was emphasized by collaborative efforts within the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

During a visit to Beloit Rotary Club, issues discussed included housing needs, childcare availability, an updated Farm Bill, border security, roles of local hospitals in rural communities, and legislation related to the NIETC transmission line proposal. Gratitude was expressed towards Rotary Club President Stephanie Simmons for hosting.

A subsequent visit took place at Lincoln High School where interactions with students highlighted a range of vocational interests offered by the school. Thanks were given to Principal Stefanie Couch, Superintendent Nikki Flinn, and students Jeremiah Miller, Levi Bates, and Gabriella Rosado for their hospitality.

In Oak Ridge, Tennessee, a tour of the Y-12 facility underscored its role in enriching uranium for nuclear weapons as part of national security efforts. The partnership with Kansas City National Security Campus was noted as critical within the nation's nuclear weapons supply chain.

September is recognized as National Suicide Prevention Month with ongoing efforts to raise awareness about mental health crises. The National Suicide Hotline Designation Act co-authored in 2019 established 9-8-8 as a national suicide prevention hotline number.
