U.S. Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) have introduced legislation aimed at assisting servicemembers transitioning from military to civilian jobs. The Translating Military Skills into Civilian Jobs Act proposes the creation of a military training and competency record, which would document the training, certifications, and qualifications acquired during military service.
The initiative seeks to provide transitioning servicemembers with documentation that can be presented to potential employers to help determine if their military-acquired skills meet job requirements.
Senator Moran emphasized the value of skills gained through military service: "Military service provides servicemembers and veterans with unique skills that make them valuable employees to any company. This legislation would make certain every servicemember leaves the military with a document outlining the training and qualifications they achieved during their service to assist in the job search and their life after service."
Senator Rosen echoed this sentiment, stating, "The men and women of our military earn valuable skills and certifications during their service that should more easily qualify them for a wide array of high-demand civilian jobs when they transition into veteran status. I’m proud to introduce bipartisan legislation to provide every transitioning servicemember with a record detailing their training, certifications, and qualifications earned through their service so that they can more easily start their civilian careers. I’ll keep working across party lines to support our veterans."
Earlier this year, Senator Moran also introduced the Colonel Gary LaGrange AgVets Act of 2024. This act aims to expand resources for veterans pursuing careers in agriculture. Additionally, he proposed legislation for a new startup tax credit for veterans starting small businesses.
