Senator highlights infrastructure projects across Kansas

On Wednesday, a major milestone was reached with the completion of the Manhattan levee. This project, which has been in progress for decades, aims to protect the Manhattan community from flooding and also serves as an outdoor recreational space known as the Linear Trail. The project was a collaborative effort involving local, state, and federal entities.

Later that day, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Childcare Business Initiative in Manhattan. This initiative seeks to increase childcare providers and offer more childcare spots. Key contributors include Vern Henricks, the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce, Ascension Via Christi, private donors, and other supporters.

In Belvue, resources were announced for the restoration of the Belvue Bridge over the Kansas River. This bridge connects Wabaunsee and Pottawatomie counties and is crucial for local infrastructure. Appreciation was expressed for Wabaunsee County Commissioner Nancy Hier, Pottawatomie County Commissioner Greg Riat, Kansas Department of Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed, and others involved.

Celebrations continued in Alma with Mission Valley High School and Wabaunsee High School students receiving a Department of Justice grant to hire school resource officers. The funding comes from multiple sources including USD 330 and USD 329. Sheriff Robert Hoskins and Superintendents Bill Clark and Troy Pitsch were acknowledged for their contributions.

A commitment was secured from U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy ensuring that Wichita's USPS processing center will remain operational. This decision addresses concerns about potential mail delays affecting south central Kansas residents.

In Topeka on Friday, a promotion ceremony took place for General Michael Venerdi who advanced to Major General. His leadership in various roles within Kansas' emergency management and security sectors was highlighted.

The Thunder Over the Heartland Airshow at Forbes Field showcased Kansas' aviation industry with performances by groups such as the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds.

Visits to Smith Center and Kensington included stops at several local businesses while discussions at Prairie Horizon Agri-Energy in Phillipsburg focused on biofuels production.

In Russell, a tour of PureField Ingredients Biofuels Facility emphasized its role as a leading supplier of wheat protein in the U.S., with discussions on workforce needs and legislative support through initiatives like the Farm to Fly Act.

The Department of Veterans Affairs launched a webpage offering disaster relief resources for veterans affected by hurricanes Helene and Milton.

Finally, a visit to Home on the Range Cabin celebrated its historical significance tied to Kansas' state song "Home on the Range."
