Robba and I extend our holiday greetings to everyone, wishing a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We also want to acknowledge the dedication of military personnel, first responders, and law enforcement who are away from their families during this season.
Additionally, we wish those celebrating Hanukkah across Kansas and the nation a joyous Festival of Lights with family.
Reflecting on 2024, I traveled throughout Kansas meeting thousands of residents. Visiting all 105 counties allowed me to connect with Kansans and discuss various state and national issues. My office remains committed to assisting Kansans with federal agency concerns related to Social Security, Medicare, or veterans' affairs.
This weekend marked the passing of former President Jimmy Carter. Known for his service in the U.S. Navy, as Governor of Georgia, and as President, Carter was a champion for human rights globally. His efforts earned him the Nobel Peace Prize later in life. Robba and I offer condolences to his family.
On Monday, Rep. Tracey Mann (KS-01) and I announced draft legislation aimed at reforming Haskell Indian Nations University by transferring governance from the Bureau of Indian Education to an independent Board of Regents while maintaining federal funding. This change seeks to restore high-quality education that honors indigenous heritage.
I met with leaders from The University of Kansas Health System last Friday to discuss future plans for care and education services provided by KUMC and TUKHS.
A retirement reception was held for Kurt Moldrup, Assistant Director of Riley County Police Department, recognizing nearly four decades of service.
Senator Van Hollen (D-Md.) and I introduced legislation to amend how Supplemental Security Income is calculated for individuals with disabilities who marry. The proposed changes aim to empower these individuals without penalizing them financially for marriage choices.
Lastly, Olen Mitchell, a WWII veteran from Hutchinson who received a Purple Heart in 1944 passed away this week. Earlier this year he was honored at the D-Day Commemoration in Normandy.
