U.S. Senator Jerry Moran recently paid tribute to World War II veteran Olen Mitchell on the Senate Floor. Mitchell, who was 103 years old, passed away on December 24, 2024, at Hester Care Center in Hutchinson.

Senator Moran reflected on Mitchell's life and his connection to Kansas, stating, “While Olen was born in Oklahoma, Kansas is the place he called home, and we are honored to call him our own.” He emphasized the values that Mitchell gained from his upbringing in western Kansas, noting they taught him discipline and hard work.

Moran highlighted Mitchell's military service during World War II. Despite being injured two weeks before D-Day in Italy and receiving a Purple Heart, Mitchell continued serving in the Military Police. After his service, he received numerous honors including the Bronze Star and Combat Infantryman Badge.

The senator recounted a personal memory from June of last year when he spoke with Mitchell during the 80th anniversary of D-Day while visiting Normandy. "It was my honor to thank him for his service during World War II," Moran shared.

Moran described Mitchell as embodying compassion and courage and acknowledged his significant impact on the Hutchinson community. He noted that whenever he visited Hutchinson with Mitchell, it was evident how much respect and admiration people had for him.

Mitchell's family life was also celebrated; he was married for 68 years until his wife's passing and served as a role model to three generations of family members. His involvement in community events like driving Senator Moran in July 4th parades showed his deep connection with those around him.

In closing remarks about veterans' visits to Washington D.C., Moran shared a personal anecdote about calling his father from the World War II Memorial—a reminder of the gratitude owed to veterans like Olen Mitchell. The senator concluded by expressing collective appreciation: “We love you; we respect you, and we thank you for your service.”

The Kansas Honor Flight Foundation also honored Mitchell after his passing with a heartfelt message: "Heaven needed a hero just in time for Christmas."
