U.S. Senators Jerry Moran, Steve Daines, and Martin Heinrich have announced the Senate's approval of a resolution to designate the week starting February 3, 2025, as "National Tribal Colleges and Universities Week." This initiative aims to acknowledge and support the accomplishments of students attending Tribal Colleges and Universities.
Senator Moran highlighted the importance of these institutions by stating, “Tribal colleges and universities, like Haskell Indian Nations University, provide native students the opportunity to receive a higher education in an environment that prioritizes their heritage and culture.” He added that this legislation is an opportunity to recognize both tribal students and educators for their achievements.
Senator Daines emphasized the significance of these colleges in Montana's communities: “Our tribal colleges and universities play a vital role in Montana’s communities and provide incredible opportunities for higher education on or near Montana’s reservations.” He expressed pride in introducing legislation that allows national recognition for Montana's educational community.
Senator Heinrich expressed satisfaction with the Senate's decision: “I’m pleased the Senate passed my resolution designating this week as National Tribal Colleges and Universities Week.” He noted that this resolution acknowledges the crucial role these institutions play in fostering future Tribal leaders while maintaining educational sovereignty.
In December, Senator Moran proposed draft legislation aimed at federally chartering Haskell Indian Nations University. The proposal includes transferring governance from the Bureau of Indian Education to the Haskell Board of Regents while continuing federal funding.
The resolution was supported by several other senators including John Barrasso, Michael Bennett, Kevin Cramer, Dick Durbin, Deb Fischer, Ruben Gallego, Mazie Hirono, John Hoeven, Ron Johnson, Mark Kelly, Amy Klobuchar, James Lankford, Mike Rounds, Jacky Rosen, Bernie Sanders, Brian Schatz, Tim Sheehy, Elizabeth Warren and Tammy Baldwin.
