The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation has announced that U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) will assume the role of Chair for the Subcommittee on Aviation, Space, and Innovation.
Senator Moran stated, "The subcommittee will work on legislation to advance policies that put safety first while bolstering innovation and efficiency." He emphasized the importance of addressing recent aviation incidents by saying, "Recent tragedies demonstrate that our nation’s aviation system is facing a critical inflection point, and as Chairman, I will work to make certain air travel remains the safest method of transportation." He also expressed his intention to support the commercial space sector's growth by stating, "I also look forward to supporting our nation’s rapidly evolving commercial space sector by advancing policies which promote the industry’s growth and capabilities."
Moran highlighted Kansas' significance in aviation by noting it as home to major global aviation and aerospace companies. He said his work would be informed by these companies along with small businesses involved in supply chains.
The subcommittee oversees key agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), as well as civil aviation and space policy functions within several departments including Transportation and Commerce.
The subcommittee's agenda includes investigating recent aviation accidents to ensure safety regulators are adequately equipped. It will also focus on implementing the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, which Moran helped draft. Support for NASA programs like Artemis and prioritizing STEM education are other focal points. Additionally, enabling growth in the commercial space sector is seen as crucial for national security missions.
