Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy has announced plans to modernize the U.S. air traffic control infrastructure and technology. This initiative, in collaboration with Congress and industry partners, comes in response to recent incidents including an American Airlines crash in January and outages at Newark International Airport. These events have highlighted the urgent need for improvements within the national airspace system (NAS).
The NAS is expected to continue experiencing commercial growth, but current technology limitations hinder modernization efforts. Secretary Duffy's plan aims to replace outdated telecommunications, radar, and tower infrastructure while integrating new technology into air traffic control systems. The proposal also includes constructing new air traffic control centers.
In March, Secretary Duffy joined Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) to gather feedback from other members of Congress and aviation industry stakeholders regarding air traffic control system updates. This effort aligns with ongoing initiatives within Congress, the administration, and industry to enhance U.S. air traffic control and NAS modernization.
"The U.S. aviation industry does not exist without its consumers feeling safe to fly," noted Secretary Duffy, emphasizing the consensus among the administration, Congress, and industry on improving American airspace.
