The U.S. Senate has unanimously passed a resolution to designate May 2, 2025, as National Space Day. The resolution was introduced by Senators Jerry Moran of Kansas and John Hickenlooper of Colorado, both members of the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Subcommittee on Aviation, Space and Innovation.
Senator Moran emphasized Kansas's significant role in aviation and aerospace manufacturing, stating: "Kansas has a rich history in aviation and aerospace manufacturing and is an important contributor to this new era of space exploration." He also highlighted Wichita's contribution: "The aerospace community in Wichita – the Air Capital of the World – and across the country has secured America’s leadership in space exploration."
Senator Hickenlooper remarked on America's achievements in space: “From one small step for man to giant leaps for mankind, the U.S. has redefined what’s possible in space,” adding that National Space Day will honor this legacy.
The Cosmosphere in Kansas expressed pride in being part of the resolution. They stated: "As one of the nation's premiere STEAM education centers and space museums, the Cosmosphere is proud to call Kansas home.” They aim to inspire future generations through their educational programs.
Heather Pringle, CEO of Space Foundation, praised the initiative: “Space Foundation applauds the effort led by Senators Moran and Hickenlooper to introduce a resolution recognizing...National Space Day.” She noted that it highlights past achievements while inspiring future possibilities.
